Float Fishermen of Virginia                                Fall 2000

Whitt River Bend Park

For the past two years, our state Labor Day float has taken place on the New River at the proposed Whitt River Bend Park. The state organization and some local chapters have been influential in getting this land recognized as a perfect location for canoe camping. In order for this to become a reality, more club and individual support is required.

So far, an option on the property will hold it until this summer,  when the purchase price of $115,000 will guarantee that this tract will remain under the stewardship of the town of Pearisburg. If you camped at the Whitt River Bend Park, please consider what you would have paid at a commercial campground, and make out a check to the Town of Pearisburg, directed towards the Whitt River Bend Park.

FFV On Line

Do you know how many chapters compose the State Float Fishermen of Virginia? Do you know that there is a chapter for FFVs who live outside the state? Do you know what the state organization's bylaws look like? Do you want to post a message for other FFVs on a bulletin board? Thinking of getting a membership in a chapter that has something going on just about every weekend?

Yes, Virginia, Floats are on line. To reach a bunch of chapter pages, go to your search engine and type in floatfishermen. Select a site with links. Be sure to check out the Steve Keller and the Scotts Creek sites: one has a great calendar of events for its members and the other posts the state organization's bylaws, among other items of interest.

The President's Paddle

Hello fellow paddlers and fishermen, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Larry Born and as of this past Labor Day, I was passed the traditional paddle and will be your new president for the next two years. I feel honored that you have enough faith in me to elect me to this office. With your continued support, I know the next two years will be as good as the last two. I personally appreciate the job Roc Cooper did for the FFV and wish to thank him for a job well done.
We had a good turnout for the Labor Day float. Saturday provided a great day of fun on the New River followed by dinner and a great evening of socializing. The water was high Sunday so some folks decided to float Walker Creek instead of the New River. Fishing was good with everyone reporting a good catch of redeye bass. Thanks to everyone involved in putting this weekend together, especially the Scott Creek chapter for the outstanding dinner they served.
The winter meeting will be held at the Cumberland State Forest Headquarters, December 2nd. This is our most important planning meeting for the upcoming year. Your participation is very important. I am looking forward to seeing all of you there. We need input from all chapters so we can put together an agenda for the meeting. Send comments/suggestions to me at:
leborn8346@yahoo.com or 8609 Farys Mill Rd. Gloucester, VA 23061. After the meeting, we will have roasted oysters for appetizers followed by Jim Garner's famous catfish dinner.
