Duke Power’s plans for a fossil fuel-burning plant at Foster Falls will be opposed by FORVA unless plans include an effort to recycle cooling water. Recycling water within a closed system rather than allowing it to evaporate reduces the amount of water taken from the river. It was moved and seconded that FFV send a letter requesting a public hearing on Foster Falls.

·

In the planning stage is an Old Dominion power plant near Remington that will use water from a waste treatment plant.

·

For members’ perusal were copies of a Canoe Cruisers newsletter outlining their efforts to preserve areas around the Potomac Falls and a Nature Conservancy report outlining the inroads of an invasive plant called the phragmites australis.

Don Leeger reported the membership list is in fluctuation as he has dropped names of members who did not meet the April 15th deadline for this year‘s dues. He requested anyone present who had not received a newsletter to write down his/her name and address and give it to him.

Bob Born reported that there have been a few problems with the web page, since the carrier has moved. Anyone with suggestions for a new IPS can e-mail them to Bob. Bob also requested copies of chapter newsletters he can include in the web page.

Since the FFV Foundation is looking at some tracts that could come under our ownership, Bill Tanger mentioned that Westvaco lands being sold off might be too big for the FFV to consider, but individuals within FFV might be interested in privately owning some of the parcels.

Submitted with more than the usual trepidation, (since it is not easy trying to fill in for Mr.Ellis, who was absent due to a bad leg infection),

Rappahannock Threatened !

VDOT is proposing an interstate-grade bridge crossing of the Rappahannock River just below the confluence. While not a 'raging whitewater' section, this is a remote wilderness setting that many of us value just as much. The usual claim is being made that this crossing is the 'only' way to reduce congestion.

God know folks, we can put highways anywhere but once a river is gone, it's gone forever. We can't relocate a river. This bridge will transform forever the River.

VDOT is accepting ONLINE comments on this harmful proposal. You gotta wade through a bunch of 'leading' questions but you can focus on your own concerns at the bottom.

We're advising that folks choose either 'No Build' or to vote AGAINST Corridors 1,2,4 ( all essentially the same - just below the confluence. They've already decided that Corridor 1 is what they want to build).

Thanks for taking a few minutes to submit your comments. VDOT counts every 'vote'. A few minutes is not too high a price to leave something for those that follow us.

If you want to help more and/or have questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
