Roanoke River Clean Up / April 7 th

A dozen or so dedicated RVCers braved sub freezing temperatures Saturday morning to come out for the annual Roanoke River clean up, which this year included the usual section along River Road in Salem, plus Rutrough Road just below the Explore Park where Back Creek empties into the Roanoke, in Roanoke County.

Roanoke River, clean

All together about 15 bags of trash plus numerous pieces of debris too large for bagging were collected from both locations.

A few gathered for lunch and liquid refreshment at the River Rock afterwards, but no one opted to float this year. Cold water, low temperatures and brisk winds didn't stop these trout fishermen however. As the sun rose higher, and the air warmed to a toastie 36 degrees, several were spotted thrashing the water, though none were seen with any catches...

A popular play spot in higher water, now cleared of debris including the usual bottles, cans, plastic bags, boards with nasty decking screws, old lawn chairs, pottery shards, metal shed framing, etc.-- but this time, at least no tires. All trash was gathered is small bunches along the road for the city to pick up.

Thanks to everyone for coming out, and especially Ken and Kurt for getting everything organized. Join us next year and perhaps the weather will be more accommodating!
