Memorial Day Weekend at R5,

Rappahannock River / Sunday, May 27th 2007

Mott's Landing to Old Mill Park, Fredericksburg VA / (page 1) (page 2) (page 3) (page 4) (page 5) (page 6) (page 7) (page 8) (page 9)

Adult & nest
This family of Bald Eagles was a definite highlight of the trip.

Two on the nest

Close up of the nest shows two young, both apparently watching the adult. It takes four to five years for the distinguishing white head and tail to emerge, but the beaks go from black to yellow after the first year. Only a little yellow is visible, suggesting that these chicks are barely more than a year old.

Adult eagle
A second adult was nearby, according to a wading fishermen we had just passed, but we never saw it. Unless side by side it is very difficult to distinguish between the male and female, so we can't be certain which parent was watching the nest.
